London-Canada’s Suncor Energy is buying a stake in the large, but problematic Rosebank oil project, west of the UK’s Shetland Islands, as it seeks new sources of growth away from its struggling operations in Alberta. The purchase of the 30% stake from Austria’s OMV may raise hopes for an eventual decision by the Rosebank partners, led by Chevron, to go ahead with the project. But the impression of a North Sea industry treading water, making few commitments, looks likely to persist.
