London—The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has clashed with the 67% state-controlled Statoil, the biggest oil and gas operator by far on the shelf, telling it to go ahead with a small oil development that the group is seeking to delay. The NPD told Platts that the directorate had responded to a request from Statoil, insisting that precepts governing responsible resource exploitation in the Norway’s petroleum law meant that development of the 50 million barrel Trestakk discovery in the Norwegian Sea must continue to original plan. The plan for Trestakk was as a subsea tieback to the nearby Asgard field with a production start in 2018.
