Washington—The US oil industry plans to ask the White House to provide more time to comply with forthcoming gasoline sulfur-reduction requirements, saying refineries will not be able to complete necessary upgrades by the proposed rule’s 2017 deadline, potentially leading to fuel shortages. The White House Office of Management and Budget is currently reviewing the so-called Tier 3 rule, which, beginning in 2017, would lower the allowable level of sulfur in gasoline to 10 parts per million, from the current 30 ppm, along with ordering other reductions in harmful emissions.
