London—The remaining European companies operating in Syria’s upstream are expected to follow the lead of Shell and Total and cease their operations in the Middle Eastern country following the imposition of new EU sanctions on Damascus, analysts believe. The EU December 1 tightened sanctions against Syria’s energy sector, naming three Syrian oil companies as part of new measures to isolate President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The new measures blacklist state-owned General Petroleum Corporation (GPC), Syria Trading Oil (Sytrol), and a GPC joint venture, Al Furat Petroleum Company.
