Analysts see shift in power at Sakhalin 1

Moscow-Analysts believe the Russian government may move to take a bigger stake in the ExxonMobil-led Sakhalin 1 oil and gas project in Russia’s Far East after reports emerged that the total cost of the project could double to more than $100 billion. A source close to the government body that oversees Sakhalin 1 was quoted as saying October 14 by Russian daily Vedomosti that Exxon Neftegaz, which operates Sakhalin 1, had requested that capital expenditure over the lifetime of the project increase to $47.9 billion and operating costs to $52.2 billion. The new price tag would make Sakhalin 1 the most expensive project in Russia.
