New York-Valero Energy appeared to call the bottom of the US refining market on January 27, at least for itself, saying it should be "profitable" in 2010 after a string of 2009 quarterly losses. The company announced a $155 million ($0.28/share) loss in the fourth quarter of 2009, excluding special items, and a full-year 2009 loss of $55 million ($0.10/share) on lower products margins stemming from weak demand and a tight discount for sour crude.
