Vienna-Angola's state-owned Sonangol has exercised its right of first refusal to acquire US oil company Marathon's 20% interest in Angola's offshore block 32, in a move that scuppers a deal with Chinese companies CNOOC and Sinopec. "We are exercising our right of first refusal," Sonangol Chairman Manuel Vicente said early September 10 after OPEC's late night meeting in Vienna. Vicente said Sonan-gol had already informed Marathon of its deci sion in writing.
