Optical Fibre--Continued--China, the world's largest consumer, is becoming a larger producer

Last year, China imported 22 million km of fibre. The domestic fibre industry drew 64 million km at 16 facilities. More than 90% of the 64 million km was drawn from imported preforms or preforms based on imported cladding cylinders. The mix of imported fibre, preforms, and cladding tubes is shifting, as Chinese companies and their partners invest in preform capacity. Trade data available through May shows May was the peak month for imported cladding tubes -112 tonnes, up from 104 in March, the previous record.
