While other Canadian oil and gas producers have recently announced plans to jack up spending next year, it was actually oil sands giant Canadian Natural Resources that got the ball rolling last month when it said it would restart work at its dormant steam-driven Kirby North oil sands project (OD Dec.14'16). Kirby was put on the shelf last year after Canadian Natural had already sunk C$700 million (US$524 million) into the project. Its resurrection in November was the first strong sign that Alberta's oil patch was returning to the offense after two years of playing defense during the collapse in commodity prices.
