Crude Futures Shrug Off Surge in US Inventories

Total US petroleum stocks -- including refined products and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) -- have surpassed 2 billion barrels for the first time, but US crude oil futures shrugged off that news on Thursday, closing just 26￠ lower at $46.38 per barrel. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported an increase of 7.6 million bbl in commercial crude oil inventories for the week ended Oct. 9, pushing total US petroleum stocks to the highest level since the EIA starting counting them in 1990.
