Valero to End Imports of Light, Sweet Crude

Surging domestic production of light, sweet crude -- along with increasing capacity to move this oil to refineries -- are allowing US refiners to significantly curtail expensive imports of similar grades at refining hotspots in the US Gulf Coast region. Valero, the largest independent refiner in the US, already has slashed imports of light sweet to its Gulf Coast refineries to 28,000 barrels per day in March 2012. That’s a five-fold decrease from the 158,000 b/d in light sweets that it imported in March 2011, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
