Europe’s Iran Oil Embargo Draws Muted Response From Asian Nations

Reactions were muted in Asia after the European Union decided on Monday to ban imports of Iranian crude from Jul. 1 and to impose other financial sanc- tions to tighten the US-led embargo of Iran over its nuclear program (OD Jan.24’12). Japanese officials stressed the need for stability in the oil markets, while Indian Oil Minister S. Jaipal Reddy described Iran’s oil terms as “favorable” and suggest- ed there may not be much change to In- dia’s oil-buying habits. Little emerged from China and South Korea, where the Lunar New Year was observed as a public holiday Monday.
