The number of students progressing to second year at the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand has increased from 40%, two years ago, to 60% for the 2011 academic year, owing to the introduction of a student assistance programme. School of Mining Engineering head Professor Fred Cawood says it is important for the university to understand the background of students to assist in their progression to second year.
