Johnson Matthey: 'Platinum market moves to deficit in 2012'

THE platinum market will move into a deficit this year as strikes and safety stoppages in South Africa and a reduction in auto-catalyst recycling affect supply while demand remains steady, Johnson Matthey said in its platinum 2012 interim review. Worldwide, platinum mine supply is expected to fall to 5.84Moz in 2012, down 10% from a year earlier, with recycling generating 1.83Moz of supply, while platinum demand is forecast to reach 8.07Moz, slightly down from 2011.
