Merafe Resources, Xstrata's joint venture partner in its South African charge chrome operations, does not believe there will be any new entrants or capacity expansions in the South African market for at least three years, it said last week. "The limited availability of power from [state energy provider] Eskom, access to financing as well as the large capital cost, have acted and will continue to act as barriers to any planned expansions by South African ferro-chrome producers or new entrants for at ieastthe next three years," Merafe said.
