GERDAU STARTS RAMP UP OF NEW SAO PAULO MINI-MILL

Brazil's-Gerdau group started the ramp up of its new Aracariguama, Sao Paulo state mini-mill on November 9, according to investor relations director Osvaldo Schirmer. The electric arc furnace-based rebar mill will start up with first-phase crude steel capacity of 900,000 tpy, a production rate that should be achieved in six months to one year's time, he said. First-phase rolling capacity of 600,000 tpy should be in full operation by the end of 2006, Schirmer said. For the first few months until the rolling mill comes on stream, billets produced at Aracariguama will be sent to other Gerdau mills in Brazil for roiling.
