NEW GUINEA'S 2.5BN DOLLARS ALUMINA PROJECT SEEKS GLOBAL PARTICIPANTS

Gapco talks to Mike Cooper about its ambitious plans for an alumina refinery in the west African state of Guinea. It is now looking for lenders and investors with the same ambition. At the Sangaredi bauxite mine in Guinea, west Africa, a new 2.2 bn dollars alumina project is being planned. When complete the Boke Alumina Corp (BAC) will be one of the largest producers of alumina in the world with a production capacity of 2.6 million tpy, and the potential to expand to 5.2 million tpy. This is one-and-a-half times larger than the 3.1 million tpy Worsley alumina refinery in western Australia, currently the western world's biggest. "Our analysis leads us to believe that this project would be one of the lowest-cost producers in the world. The lifespan of the project is potentially 100 years, such is the extent of the available bauxite resource," said Bruce Wrobel, president of Guinea Aluminium Products Corp (Gapco), which is spearheading the project.
