MIM's Avonmouth zinc and lead smelter in the UK could stop production this week, following the collapse of takeover talks with Marco International. Arthur Taylor, regional secretary of the Amacus trade union, told MB that the future of the plant now lies in the hands of its workforce, who will vote on whether to see through the current 90-day consultation period or move for a closure. The results of the ballot will be known on February 18 and could result in an immediate closure. The consultation period is due to end on March 14. Apart from Marco, no other company has made an approach for the smelter. Talks between the two companies are thought to have collapsed last week over environmental liabilities.
