Our research group has previously demonstrated that the "internal free volume" (Figure 1) swept out by iptycene moieties incorporated into polymeric sensors can be utilized to limit aggregation and provide binding cavities for analytes in explosives detection applications. The reduction in aggregation also increases fluorescence in the solid state. Such free volume has also been incorporated into the chemical structure of fluorescent and dichroic dyes, which have demonstrated enhanced anisotropic alignment in nematic liquid crystal displays. A polymer that incorporates a large amount of internal free volume may also demonstrate a high degree of miscibility within another polymeric host, regardless of whether there is any affinity between the two polymers.
