The European Commission is considering setting thresholds for the low-level presence of non-EU-approved genetically engineered ingredients in food imports, our sister publication Agrow reports. The commission will "probably" use the same mechanism as was introduced for feed imports last year, said European Health Commissioner John Dalli in remarks to the European Parliament'sAgriculture Committee on May 7. The feed rules set a threshold of 0.1% for the adventitious presence of transgenic material, provided it is already under evaluation for EU approval. The rules were a response to complaints that the EU's "zero tolerance" policy was disrupting feed supplies.
