FDA is giving animal drug sponsors three years to phase-out the use of over-the-counter, medically important antibiotics for growth promotion and replace them with veterinarian-prescribed drugs for therapeutic purpose only, the agency announced Wednesday.A draft guidance, final guidance and a proposal, the blueprint of the agency's vision for eliminating growth promoters in animal production, were expected to be published in today's Federal Register.Animal drug industry, animal producers and consumer groups have been eagerly anticipating FDA's next move on the antibiotic resistance issue.
