Egg producer cites FDA inspectors for inconsistent enforcement of SE rule

Acompany that produces eggs in Colorado, Iowa and Minnesota says FDA inspection teams are inconsistently interpreting the new Salmonella Enteritidis prevention rule and giving it contradictory food safety advice.Ken Klippen, executive director of government relations and animal welfare for Litchfield, Minn.-based Sparboe Farms, shares his company's experience with five different FDA inspection teams in three states in a five-page letter sent July 25. The letter, which was posted in FDA's online docket, Sept. 23 (www.regulations . gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2011-D-0398-0005), is one of just four comments filed in response to the agency's July 13-issued Draft Guidance for Industry: Questions and Answers Regarding the Final Rule, Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation (see FCN July 15, Page 12). The due date for comments was Sept. 12.
