Consumer groups petition FDA for GE salmon to undergo food additive review

Genetically engineered salmon should be regulated as a food additive, not an animal drug, and undergo a more rigorous review process and pre-market testing, say consumer groups who filed a petition Tuesday with FDA in the latest attempt to derail the agency from giving the new technology a green light.Food & Water Watch, Consumers Union and the Center for Food Safety contend in their 30-page petition that the agency's current review process that treats GE salmon as a new animal drug is not protective enough of the public's health, and that the agency is required by law to review the GE salmon under what should be a more rigorous process for any novel substance added to food.
