European Commission authorizes 'no added salt' claims in new regulation

Claims that a food contains 'no added salt' will be allowed in the European Union, beginning this month, under a European Commission regulation published in early November, EU Food Law reports. But the Nov. 8 regulation also bars substitution with trans fatty acids when a low saturated fats claim is made, and it stipulates that a reduced sugar claim can only be made if the overall energy content of the food hasn't increased after reformulation.
