Tncreasing consumer pressure to modify stocking densities for livestock, limit antimicrobial use and allow for outdoor rearing is likely to result in unintended consequences when it comes to food safety, warns a new report by the Ames, Iowa-based Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), a nonprofit group founded by agricultural scientists.The 12-page commentary, The Direct Relationship between Animal Health and Food Safety Outcomes, was rolled out May 7 to three audiences in Washington, D.C.: House staffers, Senate staffers (including USDA representatives), and the International Food Information Council staff (www.cast-science.org/ publications/? the _direct_relationship_ between_animal_health_andJood_ safety_outcomes&show-product&product ID=155971).
