Feed industry urges flexibility as FDA implements FSMA

The National Grain and Feed Association is urging FDA to adhere closely to the "non-prescriptive, flexible and risk-based language" used in the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) when developing proposed regulations for feed industry facilities later this year. NGFA was responding to FDA's request for comments on how to implement FSMA provisions that require food and feed facilities to identify and address hazards that could cause products to be adulterated or misbranded . The new food safety law (Section 103) requires, by July 4,2012, that FDA-registered facilities conduct a hazard analysis and put into place controls designed to significantly reduce or prevent those hazards if they manufacture, process, pack or hold foods.
