Color manufacturers dispute petition to label food colorings on front of foods

The International Association of Color Manufacturers (IACM) is contesting a petition filed with the FDA that would require food companies to disclose on the Principal Display Panel (PDP) of packages any synthetic or natural color additives.IACM says the actions called for in the 17-page petition, filed Dec. 8 by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, would provide no public health benefit.CSPI argues rather that consumers are harmed when manufacturers don't list additives on the front of packages, because color additives have the tendency to mislead consumers into thinking they're buying a healthful ingredient when they're not. The food colorings might also pose health risks, trigger allergic reactions or behavioral reactions in some children, CSPI says.
