Supreme Court justices seem skeptical of California slaughter law

At least three of the U.S. Supreme Court's nine justices expressed skepticism this week toward California's state law that would require euthanization of all non-ambulatory animals presented for slaughter.The nation's highest court on Wednesday spent an hour listening to arguments and asking probing questions in relation to the case of National Meat Association (NMA) v. Harris, dealing with whether the uniformity provisions of the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) preempt a California law that requires the ante-mortem inspection of non-ambulatory animals, a requirement for any animal slaughtered for human consumption, including pigs, sheep and goats.
