United States urged to compromise on Codex biotech labeling

Describing the United States as "standing] nearly alone" among Codex member nations, Consumers Union last week called on the Obama administration to endorse compromise Codex guidance for labeling genetically engineered food products.For more than a decade the United States has opposed development of biotech labeling guidance by the Codex Committee on Food Labeling and in recent years has urged the committee to abandon further work on the project. However, early this month the CCFL agreed to continue work on the document with a self-imposed timeline for completion next year (see FCN May 10, Page 8).
