PotashCorp this week announced that it will decrease the operational capability of its Cory mine in Saskatchewan by 600,000 mt MOP/year in an attempt to optimise production at its lower cost mines. As a result of the move, Cory will have an expected operational capability of approximately 800,000 mt white MOP, with red product no longer produced. Around 100 permanent employees and 40 temporary positions will be cut from PotashCorp’s workforce. Cory’s output cut is not surprising given the ramp-up of Rocanville, a mine with lower production costs. Moreover, potash capacity in Saskatchewan will increase markedly once K+S Legacy comes on stream. Legacy is expected to achieve first production in Q2 2017 and K+S is targeting output capacity of 2 million mt at the end of 2017.
