EU Sulphur Directive comes into force

The EU Sulphur Directive came into force on January 1 and is likely to lead to higher shipping charges. The new regulations limit the maximum amount of sulphur in fuel to 0.1% within emission control areas (ECAs) as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The current Emission Control Areas include the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the English Channel, the North American Area and the United States Caribbean Sea Area. Future potential ECA include the Mediterranean Sea and the coasts of Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan and Norway.
