Independent inquiry ordered for Orica after leak at ammonia unit

AN INDEPENDENT inquiry is to be undertaken following an incident at the Kooragang Island production site, north of Newcastle in New South Wales, of chemicals and explosives manufacturer, Orica Limited on August 8. Following the incident a small amount of sodium chromate containing hexavalent chromium was released into the atmosphere during a routine closure of the ammonia plant (right). Traces of hexavalent chromium, which is believed to be a carcinogen when inhaled, were found in western parts of the adjacent Stockton neighbourhood. The independent inquiry has been announced by the New South Wales Premier, Barry O'Farrell. It is understood that a key issue to be looked is alleged delays in Orica reporting the incident to the appropriate authorities.
