Massive explosion at Texas fertilizer plant claims lives, causes extensive damage and injuries

A huge explosion occurred just before 8 p.m. April 17 at the West Fertilizer Inc. plant in West, Texas, leveling nearby houses and businesses, killing at least 12 individuals, and injuring an estimated 180 more. The blast also caused an outbreak of fires and prompted an evacuation of part of the town. West Fertilizer is owned by Donald R. Adair, a lifelong resident of West, who also owns Adair Grain Inc. at the same location. The facility is in McLellan County just off Interstate 35, about 80 miles south of Dallas and 20 miles north of Waco.
