Informed consent for organ-donor management research: Antemortem or postmortem human research.

We agree with Rye et al (1) that informed consent for donor management research on brain-dead donors is warranted to ensure respect for autonomy . and avoid the possibility of harm. Furthermore, seeking consent shows respect to the family of the recently deceased person. Their article points out another omission to the federal regulations designed to protect human subjects in research, in this case those who have been declared brain dead. We compliment Rye et al on their analysis and would like to provide additional reasons for why informed consent is needed for research on brain-dead subjects.
