UK shale explorer Cuadrilla's application to resume shale gas exploration in northwest England was rejected by local councilors on Monday -- a crucial decision that could blow UK shale development off course for some time to come. Nine of the 14 elected councilors on Lancashire's Development Control Committee voted to reject Cuadrilla's application to drill and hydraulically fracture four wells at its Preston New Road site near Blackpool based on fracking activity's adverse effects on the rural landscape and unacceptable noise impact. An application for an array to monitor seismic activity was also turned down.
