Russia, Pakistan Approve Pipe Deal

The Russian government said Thursday it approved a draft intergovernmental agreement on construction of a gas pipeline in Pakistan, a project seen as a sign of the deepening cooperation in arms supplies between the two countries (IOD Apr.16'15). Moscow lifted an embargo for arms exports to Islamabad last year and is discussing supplies of helicopters to Pakistan. Likewise, in Uganda, arms supplies were seen by observers as the key factor behind the selection of RT-Global Resources, a subsidiary of Russia's state-run technology conglomerate Rostec, as a preferred bidder to build a refinery earlier this year (IOD Feb.18'15).
