Parliament approves deal for new Russian reactor

The Finnish Parliament has approved Fennovioma's application for the construction of a nuclear power plant supplied by Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy corporation, for its Hanhikivi-1 project at the Pyhajoki site in northern Finland. The vote, held on December 5, 2014, formally sanctioned the governments approval in September of Fennovoimas application to supplement the decision in principle originally granted in 2010 for the construction of a new nuclear plant. Because Fennovoimas application then did not consider the Rosatom reactor-a 1200-MWe class AES-2006 VVER-as a possible candidate, the company was required to apply for a supplement to the original decision in principle reflecting changes in the project. After the government approved the supplement, it had to be sent to parliament for final consideration.
