摘要

Invoking a half century of groundbreaking nuclear arms agreements, President Barack Obama took to the airwaves Wednesday to push for congressional approval of the Iran nuclear deal that he called "the strongest nonproliferation agreement ever negotiated." The speech at American University, where President John F. Kennedy announced nuclear test ban treaty talks with Russia 52 years earlier, was not short on bravura; nor were there any new arguments to add to the lengthy and well-recited list of White House talking points in favor of the agreement. But the speech added context and substance to those points in a way that elevated the conversation--and put more heft into the administration's effort to sell the deal to members of Congress still undecided on whether to vote the deal down.
