Rosneft Buys Into Saras, Eyes Italian Supply, Trading Opportunities

Further extending its position outside Russia, Rosneft is buying into independent Italian refiner Saras in a deal first mooted late last year. Under the terms of the transaction, Rosneft could become a 21% owner in Saras, with upside from partnership seen for both sides. The Italian refiner would have guaranteed supplies of oil, while the Russian state- controlled oil giant would get access to supply and trading opportunities around the 300,000 barrel per day Sarroch refinery on the island of Sardinia. The plant, located on the southwestern coast of the island, is Saras' sole refinery, but it is one of Europe's largest and most complex, thus making it one of the continent's most flexible facilities.
