Syrian Government Resigns

Syria's government resigned Tuesday after the reported death of at least 60 people in protests over the previous two weeks. Amid the worst internal crisis since he inherited the presidency from his father in 2000, President Bashar al-Assad was expecte to offer major political reforms in a speech on state television late Tuesday. There have been widespread calls for the lifting of emergency laws, the end of media censorship and reform of Law 8, which decrees the ruling Baath as the only political party allowed in Syria.
