Japan moved one step closer to reopening a nuclear reactor on Wednesday after a local mayor agreed to approve the restart of Kyushu Electric Power's Genkai plant in Saga prefecture. The move came after Minister of Trade, Economy and Industry Banri Kaieda met with Genkai city mayor Hideo Kishimoto and Saga governor Yasushi Furukawa to persuade them to reopen the plant as part of a concerted bid to ease expected power shortages this summer (IOD Jun.29'11).
