With the Atoll-1 Discovery, BP Estimates the Gas Potential of the North Damietta Offshore Block at Over 5 Trillion Cu Ft

A major new gas discovery on the North Damietta Offshore concession in the eastern Mediterranean was announced by BP on 9 March. Discovery well Atoll-1 is being drilled in deep waters from the Maersk Discoverer rig, and by then it had reached a depth of 6,400 meters, encountering a 50-meter thick gas pay zone in an Oligocene sandstone formation. Drilling will continue to take the well down a further 1,000 meters in order to test the same section of the reservoir that BP discovered on this acreage with the Salamat well drilled in 2013 (AOG, 16 Sept., 2013). BP has a 100% interest in the concession.
