Iran Is Preparing its Return to the International Market

The sanctions and economic pressures on Iran are far from being lifted, but the country has started to reap some benefit from the agreement on its nuclear program concluded in Geneva in November. The United States and the European Union effectively suspended certain sanctions for a six-month period with effect from 20 January (for further details on this, see the Top of the News and Documents sections in the 1 February 2014 edition of AOG). There is no guarantee that a definitive agreement will be concluded, but President Hassan Rohani, his advisers, the Iranian government, the Oil Minister, Mr. Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, and National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) are convinced that this prospect will become a reality in 2014 and are already acting as though this scenario applies.
