A low-energy method for creating and accurately placing picoliter drops of solvent on microfluidic devices could greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for expensive photolithographic techniques.Utkan Demirci and Mehmet Toner at Harvard Medical School have developed one such approach by using the acoustic equivalent of a heat-activated inkjet printhead (Appl.Phys.Lett.2006,88,doi 10.1063/1.2170143).
