Most major automakers reported increased sales in April. Leading the pack was Detroit-based General Motors Co. with a 5.9-percent jump to 269,056 vehicles from 254,076 in the same month last year thanks to strong truck and crossover sales, which more than offset a 12-percent decline in passenger car sales. “Consumer and commercial customer demand for pickups and utility vehicles has been building since last fall, and that’s a clear sign that the slowdown in (gross domestic product) growth during the winter months was caused by factors that are mostly transitory in nature,” said General Motors U.S. vice president of sales operations Kurt McNeil.
