osteoclasts are multinucleated cells that play a critical role in bone resorption. Following adhesion to the bone surface, osteoclasts form ruffled borders and clear zones with a highly polarized cytoplasmic organization that is a prerequisite for organizing an enclosed microenvironment. For the digestion of inorganic and organic components of the bone matrix, osteoclasts secrete H~+ and lysosomal enzymes such as acid proteases into this enclosed microenvironment through the ruffled border membrane (2).
