Australian industry welcomes regulatory rule reversals

The Australian industry association, CropLife Australia, has welcomed the release of draft legislation and a government consultation paper on further reforms to the agvet chemical regulatory system. The move fulfils an election promise of the new administration to overturn some of last year’s reforms by the previous government, which were strongly criticised by the industry body (Agrow No 667, p 16). CropLife Australia commends Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce for “acting so swiftly to implement the government’s election commitments in this area”. The government’s consultation paper on amendments to the Agvet Code demonstrates a genuine commitment to improving efficiency in regulation in the agriculture sector, without compromising human health, safety or environmental outcomes, CropLife Australia maintains. “Although we acknowledge that the APVMA [Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority] is currently carrying out its own regulatory reform process, the government’s amendments to the Code will better enable farmers to access the tools they need to farm productively and sustainably,” says CropLife Australia’s chief executive officer, Matthew Cossey.
