Analysis on the anther and pollen morphology of triploid loquat.

Anthers of triploid loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. Rosaceae) were observed with laser confocal scanning microscopy which was treated by hological trans-illumination. Pollen morphologies of triploid loquat were examined by scanning electron microscope. The result showed that: (1) anthers of triploid loquat have three different morphologies: elongated elliptic-shape, crescent-shape, and spindle-shape. The quantity of pollens in the three forms' anther is different, but there is no direct correlation between the quantity of pollen and anther morphology. Moreover, the anther form and size have significant difference in different triploid cultivars; (2) the pollens of diploid loquat plant belonging to N3P4C5 model. While the volume of natural triploid loquat pollen increased, and most of the pollens had no significant equatorial axis and polar axis, the plumpness of the whole pollen was uneven. The proportion of abnormal pollen was high. There was significant differences between pollens, most of thems were abortive. The morphological characteristics of a few triploid pollens were close to diploid pollen. Differences in size, shape and exine ornamentation of the pollen grains were found among cultivars, providing a basic information to predict fertility of cultivars and natural triploids.
