The use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and electronic nose (e-nose) techniques for fruit quality determination and early diagnosis on asymptomatic fruits was studied in Actinidia deliciosa (cultivars Hayward and Summerkiwi) and A. chinensis (cv. Hort16A). Fruit quality studies were performed on all cultivars in the field and packing house. The diagnostic studies were performed under controlled conditions on fruits experimentally inoculated with pathogenic fungi (Botrytis cinerea and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum). The olfactory profiles of the control and inoculated fruits were compared by principal component analysis. The results confirmed the efficacy of NIRS in the evaluation of fruit soluble solids content, acidity and dry matter. NIRS was also effective in determining the amounts of the main organic acids (citric acid and quinic acid) and reducing sugars (such as fructose and glucose) in fruits. The e-nose was effective in detecting green and yellow kiwifruits infected by the pathogens.
