Two assays were carried out to evaluate the effects of pretreatments on Brosimum gaudichaudii seed germination. In the first assay, small, medium, and large seeds were used. In the second assay, intact seed; intact seeds immersed in distilled waterfor 12 h; intact seeds immersed in distilled water for 24 h; seeds with tegument removed around the hilum and immersed in distilled water for 12 h; seeds with tegument removed around the hilum and immersed in distilled water for 24 h; seeds without tegument and not immersed in distilled water, were used. There was no significant difference in germination percentage (22.5-29%) betweed seed sizes. Seeds with tegument removed around the hilum and immersed in distilled water for 24 h showed the largest germination percentage (83.3%) and impermeability to water. The best method to promote and accelerate germination was the complete removal of the seed tegument.
